There are some fashion brands you simply remember.
For me, one of them is Donaldson.
Long before I started making costumes and custom clothing for Historique Couture, I was fascinated by beautiful clothes. And Donaldson was one of those brands that immediately caught my attention.
It was colourful, playful and unmistakable — but at the same time, it had something rather exclusive about it.
And yes, I was crazy about it.
Until the prices started becoming a little too crazy for me as well.
When Mickey Mouse was a fashion statement
Donaldson was a Dutch clothing brand that became particularly well known for its children's and young people's clothing, often featuring Mickey Mouse.
Today, Mickey Mouse clothing is easy to find. You can buy a T-shirt with Mickey almost anywhere.
But Donaldson was different.
The clothing had a distinctive look and quality, and the famous Mickey Mouse logo was not simply a character printed on a cheap shirt. It became part of the identity of the brand.
For many people, wearing Donaldson said something.
It was fashionable. It was fun. And, because the clothes were certainly not cheap, it could also be a little status symbol.
I remember looking at Donaldson clothes and thinking they were wonderful. The colours, the details and especially the combination of fashion and Disney appealed to me enormously.
Of course, there was a small problem.
The more I liked the clothes, the more expensive they seemed to become.
Eventually, I decided that admiring Donaldson was going to be considerably cheaper than buying it.
What happened to Donaldson?
Like many fashion brands from the past, Donaldson eventually disappeared from the high street.
The Mickey Mouse connection also changed over the years, and the distinctive Donaldson style became much less visible.
That is perhaps one of the strange things about fashion.
Something can be everywhere for a while, and then suddenly it disappears.
Years later, you find an old garment in a cupboard or at a second-hand market and immediately recognise it.
That happened to me with Donaldson.
I still have a few old children's garments tucked away in the attic.
Not because I expect to wear them again.
Simply because I cannot quite bring myself to throw them away.
They are little pieces of nostalgia.
And perhaps that is one of the nicest things about clothing: sometimes a garment becomes more valuable because of the memories attached to it.
Donaldson and cosplay
There is another reason why I find the old Donaldson style interesting today.
You don't see many Mickey Mouse costumes at cosplay events anymore.
There are plenty of elaborate fantasy characters, superheroes, anime costumes, historical outfits and incredibly detailed film replicas.
But Mickey Mouse?
Not nearly as often.
And perhaps that makes it interesting again.
Why not choose a classic?
A Mickey Mouse inspired costume does not have to mean buying a ready-made character costume. In fact, I think it could be much more fun to approach it as a fashion costume.
Imagine taking the playful colours and unmistakable Mickey Mouse details of vintage Donaldson and turning them into a carefully made cosplay outfit.
A fitted jacket.
A full skirt or pair of trousers.
A dramatic collar.
Mickey Mouse details used sparingly rather than covering every available centimetre of fabric.
Perhaps even a vintage-inspired silhouette.
Suddenly, you have something that is recognisable without looking like a mass-produced costume.
And that is exactly the kind of challenge I enjoy at Historique Couture.
From vintage fashion to handmade costume
One of the things I like most about looking at old clothing is discovering how much inspiration can still be found in it.
Fashion does not really disappear.
It comes back in different forms.
A colour combination from the 1980s, an old collar, an unusual sleeve, a particular fabric or a playful print can suddenly become the starting point for something completely new.
This is also how I approach many of my cosplay commissions.
A reference picture is rarely just a picture to copy.
I look at the shape, the construction, the fabrics, the details and — most importantly — how the finished costume needs to be worn.
For a convention costume, comfort matters. You may be wearing it for many hours, walking around, sitting down, posing for photographs and generally having a much longer day than you would in an ordinary outfit.
That is where handmade clothing has a real advantage.
It can be designed for the person who is actually going to wear it.
Would you wear Donaldson again?
Perhaps the time has come to look at Mickey Mouse a little differently.
Not as a children's character printed on a souvenir T-shirt, but as a classic piece of popular culture and fashion history.
And perhaps a beautifully made Mickey Mouse inspired cosplay would be a wonderful way to bring some of that old Donaldson feeling back.
After all, the best costumes do not always have to be complicated.
Sometimes a classic idea, beautifully made, is more memorable than something nobody has ever seen before.
And yes, I still have those little Donaldson clothes in the attic.
I suppose that tells you everything.
Some things are simply too nostalgic to throw away.
A little piece of the past, made by hand

And sometimes it comes from something you remember from your own childhood.
