Recreating Balatro’s Jester Hat
As I write this, I am working on a special commission: recreating the beautiful Jester Hat and collar worn by Balatro at the BAFTA Awards.
I had never seen it before, but when the client contacted me, I started looking into it. And what a picture! I immediately thought: yes, of course I can make this. So that is exactly what I told my client.
The internet is full of pictures of it. Easy, right?
Well… you would think so. But no!
The three wings of the hat have extra piping details, so I had to think carefully about how to construct them. And then there is the size of the hat. How do I make something this large stand perfectly upright without making it too heavy? Which fabric should I use? And can I find the exact colours?
I am already working on it, and of course that also means drawings and a little concept sketch before the real sewing begins.
But then comes the real challenge. What does the back look like? How exactly is the collar made? And how is it attached?
That is the challenge of being a cosmaker, or cosplay maker. You are often working from just a few screenshots, photographs and pictures, and then you have to figure out how something was actually made.
You see the finished costume. I have to imagine what is happening behind it.
And honestly, that is one of the things I love most about cosplay commissions. It is not simply copying a costume. It is a little bit of detective work, a little bit of engineering, and a lot of sewing.
Once the outfit is finished, I will of course show you some photos. But not before the client has received it and had the chance to wear it at the event. Until then, I will have to keep the final result a little secret.
I cannot wait to see the photos! I have no idea how the complete outfit will look when it is finally worn by the client.
And honestly, that is one of the best parts of being a cosmaker. You spend hours looking at screenshots, drawing, measuring, thinking, sewing, and solving little mysteries. And then, finally, you get to see your creation come to life.
That moment when the client wears it for the first time?
That is the ultimate reward for a cosmaker!
