How to Make a Vegan Leather Gilet

I made this vegan leather gilet some time ago, and when I looked at the pictures again, I remembered how easy and enjoyable this project was.

At first glance, the gilet looks almost like a corset. It has a close fit and gives a beautiful shape to the body. But there are no corset bones inside. That makes a big difference. You can wear it much more comfortably and move freely.

And that is exactly why I like this design so much.

A gilet with many faces

With the black vegan leather and the fringes, this gilet has a strong Western look. But it can easily become something completely different.

Add Steampunk details and it becomes a wonderful Steampunk waistcoat. Leave the fringes away, and it can work beautifully for Medieval costumes, LARP or fantasy outfits.

You could even wear it as a more relaxed Victorian-style corset. It gives some of the shape of a corset, but without the feeling that your breathing has become part of the costume!

It can also be a practical choice when your body is changing or may change in the future. Unlike a traditional corset, this gilet does not have to shape the body in the same strict way.

Is vegan leather difficult to sew?

This was one of the things that surprised me most.

The vegan leather I used was actually very pleasant to sew. Once the pieces were prepared correctly, the gilet came together quite quickly. You do need the right tools, though.

I recommend using a jeans needle and a sewing machine that is strong enough to handle several layers of heavier fabric. Do not try to sew thick vegan leather with a small, delicate machine that is meant for lightweight fabrics.

Take your time, use the correct needle and let the machine do the work.The complete gilet took me only about two or three evenings. That is not much time for a garment that can be worn in so many different ways.

Which fabrics can you use?

You do not have to use vegan leather. This pattern can be made from several different materials, for example:

Canvas
Suede
Faux suede with a little stretch
Jacquard
Vegan leather
Cotton twill

Real leather is also possible, but this will make the finished gilet considerably more expensive. Leather requires different tools and techniques, and the material itself is naturally more costly.

I always enjoy projects like this because they show that a garment does not have to be extremely complicated to look special. Good fitting, good materials and careful sewing can make a big difference.
