Yesterday I wrote about my love for Victorian costumes. But my journey into medieval clothing actually started much earlier—and for a very personal reason.
Many years ago, my son worked at the beautiful fortified town of Bourtange in the Netherlands. He wore historical clothing every day as part of his job, and I thought, "Why not make a second set for him myself?"
I never imagined that one simple sewing project would change so much.
The more I learned about medieval clothing, the more fascinated I became. I started reading books, studying paintings and museum collections, and looking closely at how people dressed hundreds of years ago. Before long, medieval costume making had become much more than a hobby. It had become a passion.
One of the things I love most is choosing the fabrics. I can spend hours searching online or walking around a fabric market, looking for that perfect piece of wool, linen or cotton. When I find exactly the right fabric, I already start imagining the costume it could become.
I especially love natural materials and soft, earthy colours: warm browns, moss green, deep red, stone grey and natural linen. They have a quiet beauty that never goes out of fashion.
As the years passed, I challenged myself with bigger and more detailed projects. I started making medieval dresses, tunics, cloaks, hoods, corsets, belts, pouches and all kinds of historical accessories. Every costume taught me something new.
Made to last!
What I enjoy most about medieval clothing is its honesty. These garments were made to last. They were practical, comfortable and beautiful at the same time. Every stitch had a purpose, and I really admire that way of working.
Today I have the privilege of making historical costumes for customers from all over the world. Some wear them for reenactment events, LARP, medieval festivals or theatre productions. Others simply love historical clothing as much as I do.
Every costume is still made by me, in my own atelier. When you send me a message, you are speaking directly to the person who designs, cuts and sews your garment. I love working together with my customers and helping them create something that feels truly personal.
For me, making medieval clothing is about much more than sewing. It is about keeping old skills alive, telling stories through fabric, and creating something that will be treasured for many years.
And after all these years, I still get excited when I put the first pieces of fabric on my cutting table. Watching a costume slowly come to life never gets old.
And may I confess one more thing?
I have always believed that most women look absolutely beautiful in a flowing medieval skirt, a linen blouse and a well-fitting bodice. There is something timeless, feminine and graceful about historical clothing that modern fashion often forgets.
Thank you for reading a little piece of my story. I hope you enjoy my creations as much as I enjoy making them.
If you are dreaming of a made-to-measure medieval costume, I would love to help you create it.
